Robotic Surgery Overview

Robotic surgery is the latest advancement in minimally invasive surgery that combines the expertise of an experienced surgeon with state-of-the-art robotic technology. Contrary to common belief, the robot does not perform the surgery independently. Every movement of the robotic instruments is completely controlled by the surgeon from an advanced computer console.

The robotic system translates the surgeon's hand movements into extremely precise micro-movements of tiny surgical instruments inside the patient's body. How Does Robotic Surgery Work?

After administering general anesthesia, the surgeon makes a few small keyhole incisions. Through these tiny openings, robotic instruments and a high-definition 3D camera are inserted into the body.

The surgeon then sits comfortably at the robotic console located inside the operating room. Looking through the high-definition 3D viewer, the surgeon controls every movement of the robotic instruments using hand controls and foot pedals.

The robotic system precisely translates the surgeon's movements into smooth, delicate, and accurate instrument movements inside the patient's body.

Throughout the procedure, the surgeon remains in complete control of the robotic system at all times.

Does the Robot Perform Surgery by Itself?

Absolutely No.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the robot performs the operation automatically. This is completely false.

The robotic system cannot think, make decisions, or perform surgery independently. It simply acts as an advanced extension of the surgeon's hands, faithfully reproducing every movement made by the surgeon.

Is Robotic Surgery Safe?

Yes. Robotic surgery has been used worldwide for more than two decades and has been proven to be safe and effective for a wide variety of surgical procedures.

Like all surgical procedures, robotic surgery also carries certain risks including bleeding, infection, anesthesia-related complications, and, in rare situations, conversion to conventional laparoscopic or open surgery if patient safety requires it.

In certain complex situations, your surgeon may decide to convert to conventional laparoscopic or open surgery to ensure the safest possible outcome. Patient safety always remains the highest priority.

Who Is a Candidate for Robotic Surgery?

Not every patient requires robotic surgery. The choice depends upon the disease, stage of illness, previous surgeries, body build, and overall health condition.

After careful evaluation, your surgeon will recommend whether robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or conventional open surgery is the most appropriate treatment for you.

Recovery After Robotic Surgery

Most patients experience significantly less pain and are able to walk within a few hours after surgery. Hospital stay is generally shorter compared to traditional open surgery, allowing patients to resume their daily routine much earlier.
